Ta-Haley Payton had traveled to Charlotte with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Setoby Armstrong, to celebrate her birthday.
Before she left, Ta-Haley told her family:
The visit turned sour at the Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Charlotte/Northlake, where an argument erupted over accusations of Ta’Haley texting other men.
The next morning, Armstrong abruptly left, abandoning her at the hotel.
Stranded and without a working phone, Ta-Haley went to a nearby Circle K gas station for help. Even though the police and medical teams came, the situation was still very serious.
Armstrong then called her mother on the morning of November 20, stating he was leaving Charlotte and that she would need to arrange to pick up Ta’Haley.
After being released from a local hospital, she managed to visit a few locations, including a British sports bar and a cookie shop, using an employee’s phone to communicate with her mother.
These messages, however, seemed off to her family, raising fears that Armstrong might have been intercepting her communications.
Her mother grew increasingly worried after a call from Ta-Haley, claiming she felt unsafe and would head to a nearby Burger King to wait for a ride.
Hours later, she texted her family, saying a friend was supposed to pick her up, but that never happened.
However, her family believes that it might have been Setoby who picked her up.
Ta-Haley Payton’s sister, Karlotta, fondly remembered her by saying:
Unfortunately, the search ended in heartbreak when Ta-Haley’s body was discovered in a wooded area of Charlotte on December 9.
Authorities have kept the case open and have made no arrests, leaving her family and community seeking justice and answers.
