Ishana Night Shyamalan Takes Inspiration From Everywhere, But First And Foremost From Her Parents

Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of M. Night Shyamalan, is making her mark in the world of horror as the father-daughter duo has come up with an exciting new horror tale, “Watcher.”

Key Takeaways

  • Ishana Night Shyamalan, the director of “Watcher,” collaborated with her father on the project.
  • Not only her father but also her sister is part of the picture; Saleka created songs for the movie.

M. Night serves as the producer, and Ishana is the writer and director of the movie, which is set to be released on June 7, indicating her directorial debut.

Talent is an understatement for the Shyamalan family. Ishana’s oldest sister, Saleka, an R&B singer and songwriter, is also involved in the film (she has written songs).

Likewise, her mother, Dr. Bhavna Vaswani, is a wellness blogger and co-owner of Vibe Vault Fit, a PA boutique fitness and wellness studio.

The dance guru has been teaching Dance Fitness classes since 2011.

She is also the co-founder and vice-president of the M. Night Shyamalan Foundation, which supports local leaders worldwide in helping communities overcome poverty and oppression.

In addition, Bhavna has worked as a therapist after earning her doctorate in Clinical Developmental Psychology from Bryn Mawr College and her B.A. in psychology from New York University.

She was employed as a counselor at the counseling centers of Swarthmore College and St. Joseph’s University.

The Tale Of A Proud Father And Talented Daughter

When asked about her dad’s influence on her work, Ishana said, “The training from him has existed my whole life.”

The NYC graduate also mentioned that she has always been present on his sets and worked as a writer, director, and producer on his Apple TV Plus series “Servant” for three years.

She has also contributed to her father’s latest hits, “Knock at the Cabin,” and the 2021 summer thriller, “Old.”

Being a famous director’s daughter does come with a price; there is pressure to live up to her father, to which she replies, “There are certain expectations the last name brings. But I love that because it’s something for me to knock down.”

She added, “Hopefully, I put my own artistic stamp on what I create. Of course there are benefits. I was lucky to be born into a life where I have the resources to make what I want to make, something that not all women of color have.”

On the other hand, the director admitted wanting to see his daughter follow his career: “I was hoping she would become a filmmaker.”

However, Shyamalan never forced her to pursue filmmaking because Ishana was talented in arts from the start; she had a thing for poetry, painting, ballet, and fashion design but eventually settled down for cinema.

Ishana has always made me very proud. And even better than making a dazzling film, she is a wonderful person,” said the boastful dad on X (formerly Twitter).
