The Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer is one of the six people missing off the coast of Sicily.
The yacht that sank on Monday claimed the life of one of the 22 people onboard. The other prominent names missing include Bristish tech tycoon Mike Lynch and Chirs Morvillo, an American lawyer.
Fifteen people have already been rescued.
Salvatore Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection agency on the Italian island, informed journalists at the scene that both Bloomer’s and Morvillo’s wives are also missing.
Bloomer, listed as the chairman of Morgan Stanley International on his LinkedIn profile, also serves as the chairman of the London-listed insurer Hiscox.
The company’s CEO, Aki Hussain, expressed profound shock and sadness in a statement on Tuesday, describing the news as “tragic.”
Jonathan Bloomer Had Three Children
Born on March 23, 1954, Jonathan Bloomer is a seasoned executive in the financial world, married with three children.
Jonathan Bloomer is married to his wife, Judy, with whom he has three children.
His wife Judy is a former director of property developer Change Real Estate. She has also been a trustee at the gynecological cancer research charity Eve Appeal for over twenty years.
Jonathan pursued his academic interests in Physics at Imperial College London in the 1970s.
After graduation, he embarked on his professional journey as a partner at the accounting firm Arthur Andersen. He spent over two decades honing his skills there before transitioning to a role in 1995 that would define much of his career.
That year, he joined Prudential, a prominent insurance and investment company, as Chief Financial Officer. His strategic acumen quickly propelled him to the CEO role within five years.
However, Bloomer’s tenure at Prudential was marked by significant challenges. In the early 2000s, financial markets reeled from the dual shocks of the dot-com crash and the aftermath of 9/11.
Under his leadership, the company faced criticism from investors over decisions such as dividend cuts. This discontent culminated in a boardroom coup in 2005, which led to his ousting—a move he referred to as “part of the ups and downs of corporate life.“
Despite the setback, Bloomer’s career did not falter. He took on leadership roles at various financial institutions, including Lucida, a pensions buy-out firm, and Scottish Re, a life insurance group.
In November 2016, he was appointed International Chairman at Morgan Stanley.
Most recently, in July 2023, Bloomer assumed the chairmanship of the insurance firm Hiscox, continuing his longstanding influence in the financial sector.
