Following the news, tributes and condolences poured in. Jackson County Schools shared a heartfelt message on Facebook:

A former student shared a touching tribute:

I hated to hear of the passing of Mr Max petett. My heart is hurting, this man went out of his way several times to make sure I had a ride home because I was walking home from school everyday. He truly was one of the kindest men I have ever met. He was a legend/ staple for Monroe county athletics. Thank you Mr Max for caring about me and every student he ever had. Can’t express how big of a loss this is for Tompkinsville KY. Hopefully one day I can become half the man he was and I’ll be satisfied.
Rest in peace Coach Max Petett. 🙏 😔

Another colleague remembered his encouragement:

Mr. Petett hired me when I worked at CHS. He always championed me. I’ll never forget him coming in my office one day and shutting the door. He said “Dusti, you were meant for more than these 4 walls. Go back to school to be a teacher. We need you on the other side.” And I did! Thanks Mr. Petett for believing in me. I am just heartbroken at this tragedy. Prayers for his family.
