The Southern Gospel community is grieving the loss of one of its most cherished voices and gifted songwriters, Squire Enos Parsons Jr., who passed away on May 5, 2025, at the age of 77 following cardiac arrest.

A towering figure in the genre, Parsons leaves behind a legacy defined by powerful lyrics, heartfelt melodies, and faith.

Born on April 4, 1948, in Newton, West Virginia, Squire Parsons was introduced to music by his father, a deacon and choir director at Newton Baptist Church.

There, he learned to sing using shaped notes, a foundational skill that would shape his remarkable musical journey.

A Lifelong Ministry Through Music

Squire Parsons’ professional music career began in 1969 with the Calvarymen Quartet, but his 1975 addition as baritone to the Kingsmen Quartet launched him into the national spotlight.

During his tenure, his voice graced Gospel classics like “It Made News In Heaven”, “Look For Me At Jesus’ Feet”, and “Master Of The Sea”, songs still sung in churches today.

In 1979, Parsons stepped away from the Kingsmen to focus on solo ministry.

That same year, he was ordained a minister at Trinity Baptist Church in Asheville, North Carolina, which would be his spiritual home throughout his life.

His songwriting flourished during this era, birthing beloved standards such as “Sweet Beulah Land”, “He Came To Me”, “The Greatest Of All Miracles”, and “I Call It Home”.

Parsons also led groups that continued to spread the Gospel through music, including Squire Parsons & Redeemed (1984–1991), The Squire Parsons Trio (1995–2009), and limited appearances with The Squire Parsons Quartet in 1992.

A Decorated Career And Humble Servant

Squire Parsons’ contributions to Southern Gospel did not go unnoticed.

He also appeared with the Billy Graham Crusade and was a cherished presence in the Gaither Homecoming series.

Despite retiring from touring in 2019 due to health concerns, Parsons continued singing at his church in Asheville when able.

Though weathered by time, his voice still resonated with the same spirit and devotion.

His influence endures through countless songs recorded by Gospel greats like the Gaither Vocal Band, The Cathedrals, Brian Free, Gold City, and many more.

His music not only comforted hearts but also pointed listeners toward heaven.

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming, and the Parsons family has requested continued prayers during this time of mourning.

Squire Parsons spent a lifetime writing the soundtrack to Christian hope, longing, and faith.

His voice may be stilled, but his songs continue to echo in churches, choirs, and hearts worldwide.
