John Dickerson’s Future At CBS Evening News Is Confirmed

John Dickerson Set to Co-Anchor CBS Evening News After 2024 Elections!

Key Takeaways

  • CBS officially announced John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois as the new anchors.
  • He currently hosts “The Daily Report with John Dickerson” on weekday evenings.
  • “On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he praised Kamala Harris for her “relentless” debate strategy against Donald Trump.

John Dickerson, a well-known American journalist and reporter, is not leaving CBS Evening News; in fact, he has recently been named one of the show’s new co-anchors.

CBS officially named John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois the new CBS Evening News anchors on Thursday, August 1, 2024. They will take over from Norah O’Donnell.

After the 2024 elections, the new anchors will step in for O’Donnell as the broadcast moves back to New York City under the direction of ’60 Minutes’ veterans.

The program will see format revisions alongside its move back to New York City as part of a broader transformation.

Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News and Stations, said in a statement:

With Norah’s decision [to leave the show], we began reimagining and redesigning the Evening News. The strength of CBS News has always been in its ensemble of journalists, both in front of and behind the camera, and our goal with John, Maurice, Margaret and Lonnie at the Evening News is to elevate the best in their fields every night for our viewers.

Dickerson began his career with CBS in 2009 and has since hosted both “Face the Nation” and “CBS This Morning.”

He has contributed to “CBS Sunday Morning” and “60 Minutes” and served as the interim anchor for “CBS Evening News” before O’Donnell took over.

Currently, he hosts “The Daily Report with John Dickerson,” which airs on weekday evenings.

John Dickerson Discusses Harris VS. Trump Debate On “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”

CBS anchor John Dickerson recently talked about Vice President Kamala Harris’s debate with former President Donald Trump on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

He praised Harris for being “relentless” in her approach, pointing out that she turned Trump’s baiting tactic against him, making him lose focus and become emotional during the debate.

Following the Harris-Trump debate, one X user wrote:

I watched John Dickerson on Colbert right after the debate. It was a similar case of spinelessness. He did everything he could to AVOID saying Harris destroyed Trump in the debate, that he made an ass of himself, & that she answered any & all Qs of her readiness for the job.

Meanwhile, another wrote:

Always appreciate John Dickerson’s thoughts; thank you. On the other hand, @GovDougBurgum @DougBurgum did his usual Deflect, Deflect, Deflect when asked specific questions. Why the GOP & citizens stand behind Trump is a total mystery. He will ruin democracy as we know it.

Furthermore, John pointed out that Trump’s responses, including a bizarre claim about cats being eaten, distracted from core policy discussions.

Harris’s focused strategy showed she was ready and could manage pressure well, which are essential qualities for a president.

Dickerson noted that although debates aren’t always game-changers, this one was important because of Harris’s strong performance and Trump’s weaknesses.

In Case You Didn’t Know

  • Born in Washington, D.C., on July 6, 1968, Dickerson is the son of Claude Wyatt Dickerson and the notable journalist Nancy Dickerson.
  • He graduated from Sidwell Friends School in 1987 and later earned a degree in English with distinction from the University of Virginia.
  • He is married to Anne Dickerson, and the duo has two children, Brice and Nancy.
